Hair loss is a natural part of life and as we age so this natural occurrence increases. Hair loss often knocks a person's confidence and takes a toll on how they appear to the world. This does not have to be the case though and adding lavender oil to your scalp and gently rubbing it in could increase hair growth. Here's how.

What are essential oils?

Essential oils are extracted from plants by methods including distillation or evaporation.

While essential oils are most famous for their aromatic capabilities, they also contain strong chemical properties which are known to be beneficial to one's health.

Essential oils have long been used in alternative, Eastern, and homeopathic medicines thanks to their effectiveness and low risk of nasty side effects.

One of the major benefits of essential oils is their ability to help improve hair health with one in particular outshining the rest.

What the study said

In a study with Toxicological Research, hair growth promoting effects using lavender oil was investigated.

The study noted: "The purpose of this study was to determine the hair growth effects of lavender oil in female mice.

"Changes in hair follicle number, dermal thickness, and hair follicle depth were measured.

"The lavender oil group showed a significant increased number of hair follicles, deepened hair follicle depth, and thickened dermal layer, along with a significantly decreased number of mast cells compared to the other group.

"These results indicated that lavender oil has a marked hair growth-promoting effect, as observed morphologically and histologically." http://www.toxicolres.org/journal/view.html?doi=10.5487/TR.2016.32.2.103

Lavender oil has shown to help increasing hair by allowing the hair follicles to grow thicker and faster than normal.

It's been said that lavender oil may also help in treating pattern baldness, however more studies on humans need to be conducted.

Scientists also believe lavender oil helps keep hair lice at bay due to its properties which kill the pesky hair critters.

How to use lavender oil for the hair at home

Health experts advise mixing several drops of lavender oil into three tablespoons of carrier oil such as olive oil or melted coconut oil.

Use this oil to then apply directly onto the scalp by gently rubbing it in.

Leave the mixture on for at least ten minutes before washing it out and shampooing as normal.

This process can be repeated several times a week for optimal results.
