Dennis Rickman Jr tragic death sent shockwaves through Walford after he drowned during the doomed boat party on EastEnders.
His demise has left mum Sharon Mitchell grief-stricken as she struggles to cope, 14 years after the death of the love of her life - his father, also called Dennis.
So how did Sharon and Dennis meet and fall in love all those years ago? And how did he die?
Dennis first appeared on the Square after dad Dirty Den, who was also Sharon's adopted dad, returned from the dead.
His daughter Vicki, who was borne from a fling between Den and Michelle, traced Den back to Walford after discovering he also had a son he never knew he had - Dennis.
Den explained that the body found in the canal was actually Vinnicombe, a senior member of The Firm who was murdered as punishment for Den escaping.
Den became embroiled in a feud with Sharon's ex-boyfriend Phil after hearing he hit her and arranged for Dennis to be beaten up by a gang.
His revenge included sleeping with Phil's sister Sam, helping Lisa Fowler get daughter Louise back and organising a scam to get him imprisoned. The feud also helped Dennis get closer to dad Den.
Den fled the Square after Phil confronted him and headed to Spain.
However when he returned, Den was furious to discover that Sharon and Dennis were in a romantic relationship and accused it of being incest.
Initially, he tried to persuade Dennis to dump Sharon but when he failed to do so, Dirty Den turned nasty and mocked him for believing that their bonding at Christmas was real.
Their chat turned violent when Den hurled him through some doors in The Queen Vic before making some vile comments about Dennis' neglected childhood, suggesting that he suffered sexual abuse while in care. Dennis loses it and goes to hurt him, but accidentally hit Sharon after she suddenly arrived.
Den felt guilty over his daughter being hurt and he went on to claim that he wanted them both in his life but couldn't do so if they were together.
In the end, a confused Dennis broke up with Sharon in order to have a father-son relationship with his dad.
With the arrival of Den's estranged wife Chrissie, the Watts family became closer but that didn't last after he cheated on her and made a pass at Dennis' girlfriend Zoe.
Meanwhile Dennis and Sharon continued their affair in secret behind Zoe and Den's backs and they planned to leave together on Christmas Day that year.
However Zoe suddenly announced that she was pregnant and Dennis didn't want to be an absent father, resulting in Sharon leaving without him.
Dennis stayed with Zoe but wouldn't sleep with her, oblivious to the fact that Zoe had lied about the pregnancy to get him to stay with her,
Den, finding out that Zoe had been lying about the pregnancy, lured Zoe into bed with him on the pretense that he would make her pregnant.
Dennis found the pair in bed together and ended his relationship with Zoe before leaving to be with Sharon.
Sharon and Dennis returned to Walford together as a couple months later and went on to marry.
They later discovered that Den was murdered by Chrissie and, along with Phil, got justice and had her jailed before selling the Queen Vic back to the Mitchells.
On Christmas Day in 2005, Sharon was admitted to hospital with suspected food poisoning but discovered that she was pregnant after previously believing she was infertile.
Johnny later attacked Sharon after Dennis meddled with him and his daughter Ruby but after discovering that she was pregnant, warned her that if she and Dennis were gone by midnight he wouldn't kill Dennis.
Sharon confided in Phil about what Johnny had said and, in turn, Phil told Dennis.
Furious, Dennis beat Johnny within a inch of his life and left a phone in his grasp, saying that if he could reach it then he would live.
Instead of calling for an ambulance, Johnny calls one of his henchmen to put a hit out on Dennis.
As Dennis made his way across the Square towards Sharon, with the fireworks lighting up the sky, he was stabbed by a passer-by and collapsed.
While he lay dying in Sharon'a arms, he said "we did it", referring to their unborn son...
