Nutritional therapist Phoebe Liebling – from Motion Nutrition – recommends one 40p capsule that could help you drift off into sleep as soon as your head rests on the pillow.
"The process of drifting off at night is multi-factorial," she began. Lielbling commented on how the nervous system needs to "calm down".
"We also need to produce specific neurotransmitters and hormones to send us into a sweet slumber and keep us there without waking until morning."
Packed into one tiny pill are ashwagandha, rhodiola and brahmi – three ingredients Lielbling approves of.
"These are known as adaptogens," she explained. "They encourage flexibility of the nervous system."
She added that they "create an overall sense of calm, decrease stress levels and cumulatively increase our resilience to stress over time".
If you find your mind racing at night with various thoughts, these Ayurvedic herbs could help you.
An additional ingredient you'll find in the highly regarded 40p capsule is L- theanine.
An amino acid, it's said to soothe "the wired but tired sensation" people can experience at nighttime.
It does this by settling down the nervous transmission felt in the body, enabling a more consistent sleeping pattern.
One other component of the 40p wonder capsule – known as Motion Nutrition Unplug Night Time Nootropic – is montmorency cherry.
Lielbling continued: "Our sleep/wake cycle (or circadian rhythm) should consist of two hormones: cortisol and melatonin.DON'T MISS:Hair loss treatment: An oil which strengthens keratin to promote and increase hair growth [STUDIES]Warning signs: The scent on your skin may be signalling a serious health condition [INSIGHT]Parkinson's disease: Orthostatic hypotension is a lesser known warning – what is it? "Cortisol peaks in the morning and we feel energetic, this then declines over the day and is replaced by melatonin at bedtime causing us to feel sleepy.
"If this cycle gets a bit wobbly, then it needs gentle retraining." Lielbling suggests taking Unplug Night Time Nootropic could encourage a better routine.
She explained it could "strengthen that evening peak" as montmorency cherry is "a natural source of melatonin".
Lielbling believes the 100 percent natural and vegan supplement addresses "all the natural mechanisms behind a great night's sleep".
"It supports the body to do its job properly," she attested, adding it "only increases in effectiveness the longer you use it."
But what does the science say? Do clinical trials reveal that these ingredients work?
Researchers from Northumbria University agree with Lielbling. They investigated the effects of montmorency cherry on their participants.
Enrolling 20 volunteers, they either consumed a placebo or montmorency cherry for seven days.
Measures of sleep quality were recorded by actigraphy and subjective sleep questionnaires.
At the end of the experiment, the total melatonin content was significantly elevated in those who took the supplement.
In addition, those exposed to montmorency cherry had an increased total sleep time compared to the placebo group.
The researchers concluded that the ingredient was "beneficial in improving sleep duration and quality".
